Description
Koi, or nishikigoi, Japanese meaning brocaded carp, are essentially large, multicolored carp kept for decoration in garden ponds. They are cold water fish and therefore can survive through the winter months.
Originally domesticated and produced for food fish in East Asia over 1000 years ago, the Chinese propagated and developed many unusual domesticated multicolored fish.
Because carp were hardy in cold waters, they eventually were propagated in many new locations, including Japan.
Koi carp were first bred for color in Japan in the 1820s but weren't seen by the rest of the world until 1914 at an annual exhibition in Tokyo.
The word koi is akin to Japanese words meaning affection or love, thus koi are symbols of love and friendship in Japan.
