Description
This northern cardinal is perched in a softly leafed river birch, keeping an eye out for a Mrs to be mate.
It is spring, the birds are flocking to the trees, grass and feeders for food and company.
Cardinals are mid sized songbirds, and love to dart through the shrubs looking for berries.
Their song is a beautiful, loud, strong, metallic chip note.
Males don bright red feathers, and have a black masked face and short red bill.
Females are softer in tone, pale brown feathers soft red highlights in the wings and tail.
Their faces also have the black mask and red bill.
Perched in the low dark green shrubs, or in the birch tree branches dappled with sunlight, they make a magnificent colorful, splashy display.
