Description
This hairy woodpecker, leuconotopicus villous, is hopping up and down my river birch pecking for insects. They will also eat berries, fruits and nuts, along with tree sap.
Almost a twin of the downy woodpecker, the hairy woodpecker has a larger body, averaging from seven to nine inches, and sports longer bill.
Their colors of rich black and white feathers make them easy to spot as they flit from tree to tree.
Extraordinary art, they carry on their backs.

This beautifully textured photograph with its blurred background artfully highlights the main star...the hairy woodpecker, cousin to one of the many visitors at the suet feeders I used to make with fresh peanut butter! Thanks for the treasured memories this Artful capture conjures afresh! L/F
