Description
Walking through a wooded area alongside a secluded stream, a pair of mallards were resting on large grey rocks. When they heard my footsteps, their heads popped out of their back feathers and eyed me. They were not a bit alarmed as I crawled very low to the ground towards them. They continued to stand on one leg, watching my movements.
The male mallard is a drake with brilliant green head, white neck ring and soft grey and black back feathers. His yellow bill is long and flat.
The female duck has woodland colors for camouflage Her subtle soft browns, grey and white feathers blend in with the thicket nest hidden somewhere near their resting spot.
Both have sapphire blue patches on their wings.
I sat for quite a while listening to the running water of the stream and bird calls in the trees. The mallards seemed to be doing the same.
