Description
Daily, red bellied woodpeckers frequent our river birch trees, which must be filled with tasty insects for the birds to eat.
The light tapping of their long black bills is a happy sound. Their song is a beautiful lilting melody.
The identifiable classic red head is not what this bird is named for.
Hard to see, but this species does have a soft red blush on its belly as its name suggests...The black and white back, wing and tail feathers are a dramatic complement with the bright brush stroke of red on the head and neck.
This woodpecker is having a good lunch..
