Description
Three millstones are used for stairs to a secluded log cabin in New Hampshire woods.
These stones are the bedstones, or the stationary parts of the pairs used in grinding grain.
The runner stones, (marked by a Spanish Cross where the axel is inserted), spin atop the stationary bedstone.
The most common material used for this purpose in Britain and the US is burrstone, an open textured, porous but strong fine grained sandstone, or a silicified, fossiliferous limestone.
The furrows in the stones, are the grinding edges that crush the grain. They also help with cooling the trapped heated air caused by the rapid friction of the spinning stones.
The beautiful stones, no longer in use as machinery, are well appreciated as ancient works of man, now functioning with a more restful purpose!
