Description
Nailed onto a painted green barn wall, are nine old horseshoes.
The farmer found most on his farm, while digging in his gardens and fields.
Their shapes are carefully made to custom fit each farm animal who was shod.
Rusted with age and exposure, they warmly present a simple picture of the handiwork of an unknown blacksmith or forger..
Their shapes are pleasing, I see gentle curves, special features made for a correct fit, and purposefully spaced and placed, in keeping with their character.
The shoes are hung heels up, to hold luck inside their shape.
Hung heels down, means the luck flows onto those who walk under them.
Why luck? The blacksmith trade was once considered a lucky trade. There was plenty of work for the blacksmith as horses were depended upon for travel and work.
Iron was considered magical because it can withstand fire.
When hung on a door, the horseshoe was supposed to protect the home by warding off evil spirits.
Here, on the green wall, I see warmth, rest, retired, design, value.
