Description
American alligators live in the southeastern USA. This large male, about ten feet long, is in a fresh water lake on St Simons Island, Georgia.
Many nest in the lake and a kayak paddle through the overhanging brush can be a dangerous endeavor.
These reptiles eat fish, snails, turtles, gar, small mammals like muskrat and coypu.
They can catch birds, deer and other reptiles. Many a dog has been snatched on a golf course, by a gator.
As I waited for this big one to swim by the reeds so I could get a clear shot, he slowed and eyed me carefully.
His eye was a black hole, lifeless.
Just as I snapped, he flipped his tail, rolled and created thunderous churn in the water.
I was startled and awed by his power, speed and swift reaction to his perceived danger.
He went under, and disappeared.
